Behind the Scenes...

This fall I had the really amazing opportunity to help a school in Toronto create a rooftop garden.  The school is downtown Toronto and they had this amazing space that was being underutilized.  My team and I came in to help a grade 5/6 class plant edibles that can be enjoyed by the students and their families to learn how food is grown and relate to the curriculum in many areas.

The team and I started by cleaning up the rooftop and then placing planters around the roof and filling them with potting soil. Planters were donated by MicroPro Sienna and soil was donated by Premier Tech ProMix. Then the students joined us and we planted various vegetables in the planters.  The idea was to plant vegetables that are easy to grow and that the students would be able to enjoy this fall.  Over the winter we'll help their teacher with ideas for what they can do indoors for edibles, and then in the spring the veggie garden will be replanted.  This is a great opportunity to provide access to fresh food in the neighbourhood and to teach students about where food comes from.

After a few months of growing, the students from the school came down to be special guests at a taping of The Marilyn Denis Show, which was co-hosted by Jamie Oliver!  The entire audience was made up of students and they participated in the segments.  It was an amazing experience to be part of since Jamie is so passionate about healthy eating and getting kids involved in meal planning and meal prep so to be able to show this project to him and have the kids be part of it on another stage was awesome!

This experience was something I will never forget.  We have some behind the scenes photos from the project and the studio shoot.  I hope you'll all watch the segment too!

Being Thankful

It's Thanksgiving this weekend and I'm thankful for many things this year. I'll be celebrating a few times but thought it might be good to reflect on the things I'm grateful for.

  • Business has offered up some great challenges that have been frustrating at times, but mostly rewarding. With that of course comes gratitude for my clients, sponsors, and the other people who give me the opportunities to be challenged and rewarded doing what I love.
  • I managed to make it through the summer without getting a cold for maybe the first time ever; however, my cold did arrive on the first day of fall!
  • I'm thankful for the people around me who support me and encourage me.  Friends and family who make me feel like I'm important to them on a regular basis.
  • I also appreciate my fans and people I connect with on social media and in real life.  It's always great to hear feedback and know that I'm helping people become more "green."
  • I'm also thankful that I was born in Canada.  I'm moved by stories of refugees starting businesses and settling in my community like this one. I appreciate the freedoms we enjoy in this country, the spectacular landscape, the opportunities we enjoy and so much more about being Canadian.
  • I appreciate the family I have that raised me well.  I have large families that have been hugely influential on me and I'm grateful for their influence, their health, and their love.
  • And I'm grateful for my wife who supports me and makes sure my dog and I are taken care of and does so much for my business while running her own.

So now that you know some of the things I'm thankful for, what makes you thankful?
